IPTV on Firestick: install, sign in and fix the three usual problems

Why the Firestick is the most common setup in America

It is cheap, it plugs into any TV, and unlike a Samsung or LG television it will run whichever player you want. That combination is why most of our support messages come from Firestick owners.

Any model works. The 4K and 4K Max are noticeably quicker at loading a big channel list and guide, and the Max handles a 25,000-channel list without the pauses an older basic stick shows.

Installing a player, step by step

IPTV Smarters is not in Amazon's store, so it is installed through Downloader — a normal app that Amazon does carry.

1. From the Fire TV home screen, search for Downloader and install it.
2. Go to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer options and turn on Install unknown apps for Downloader. (On newer sticks this option appears only after you open About and click the Fire TV Stick line seven times.)
3. Open Downloader, type the address we sent you for the player, and let it download.
4. Install it, open it, and sign in with the Xtream Codes details from your activation email.

Allow a minute or two on first launch while it pulls the channel list and the guide.

The three things that go wrong

• “App not installed.” Install unknown apps was never turned on for Downloader, or it reset after a system update.
• Everything buffers on this stick but not on the phone. Wi-Fi. A Firestick's aerial is small and it sits behind the television, which is the worst place in the room for a signal. Move the router, use the 5 GHz band, or add an Ethernet adapter.
• The stick runs hot and slows down after an hour. Clear the player's cache, and give the stick some air with a short HDMI extender rather than plugging it flush into the TV.
