Is IPTV legal? An honest answer

The technology is not the question

IPTV means television delivered over an internet connection instead of a cable or a dish. The technology is entirely legal and completely mainstream — YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling and every cable company's own app are all IPTV. Nobody is arguing about the pipe.

The question is always about rights: whether whoever is transmitting a channel has a licence from the people who own it. That is a question about a specific service, not about IPTV as a category, and it is the reason the honest answer to “is IPTV legal” is “the technology, yes; a given service, it depends”.

How to judge a service for yourself

Licensing is not something a buyer can verify from outside, and any provider — us included — can write whatever they like on a webpage. What you can do is look at the signals that tend to travel with an unlicensed operation:

• A price far below what the rights would cost to licence.
• Payment only in gift cards or crypto, and no refund route.
• No company name, no address, no way to reach a person.
• Channels from dozens of countries that no single licence would cover.

If the legal position matters to you — and for a business or a public venue it certainly should — the safe route is a service that licenses its content directly and says publicly who it licenses from.
