What to check before you pay for a sports line

1. Test at kick-off, not at lunchtime. Peak load is the only meaningful test.
2. Open your team's actual channel, including the regional network if that is where they are.
3. Watch for ten minutes. Problems show up at the two-minute mark, not the ten-second one.
4. Check the guide lists tonight's fixture. A blank guide during a live event tells you the provider is not maintaining it.
5. Ask about PPV events before the night itself, not an hour before the walk-in.

The setup that survives a live game

• Ethernet, or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. The single biggest factor, by a distance.
• A capable device. A Firestick 4K Max, an Android box or an Apple TV rather than a seven-year-old smart TV app.
• Raise the buffer slightly in the player before kick-off rather than during the second quarter.
• Know your backup channel. Big events are usually carried on several feeds; find the alternates before you need them.
